This week I am beginning to look at key references that might inspire my outcome, which I’m fairly sure will take the form of a film. I think a film would make the most sense for this project, as the process of getting nails done itself is very time based, so it will work well depicted in a piece of time based media.

I’ve started collecting short films, and noting down features I’m fond of so that I can sway the direction of my own film:

Big fan of the edit for this film - particularly the beginning sequence with the voiceover and photographs. Probably slightly too overly coloured for me, but I love the flickering grain / dust / scratches. The speedy credits are also really fun!

A perfect heart-warming tone for me, I like the style of the interviews a lot. I do like that there’s some gentle quiet music but that mainly you’re aware of the sounds of the whole atmosphere of the restaurant beneath the voices of whoever is talking. Slightly overly coloured for me in terms of the red’s being made SO orange.

I love the opening sequence, and the conversations between the nail tech and customer. Overly green colouring, looks quite obvious to me. I like the sound design in the salons. However, not a fan of the interspersed sequences of models moving around to classical music.

I enjoy elements of the edit but mainly I like the subtitle design, and the direction in terms of cast being interviewed more casually whilst showing something (e.g. the character talking about his trousers around 2:00 minutes in).

Beautiful sound design, cinematography, colouring. Maybe slightly dark for the subject we’re exploring but still beautiful ambient lighting and nice close up shots as well as some great straight-on full shots (with the green bunker around 1:03).

Love the sound design in terms of gentle, quiet but unique music in the background, and the direction is great in terms of the questions that must have been asked to produce the interviews given by the cast. Nice B-roll on VHS too.

(Was just looking at some other projects you’ve produced so thought it would make sense to reference this one!) The edit and colouring is perfect to me, I particularly love the title screen but just in general it has a lovely colour theme and creative edit.
